On 10 April 2016 I departed for my journey to Uganda. Here I wanted to work as a volunteer for three months, I also wanted to get to know a new culture, a foreign country, and the medical care.

I lived with a guest family in Uganda, who took me in with open arms. I got to know the life, the everyday activities, and a few aspects of the culture.

As I am a Nurse and a Diplom – Pflegewirtin (Nursing Management), I really wanted to work in a health center. My placement was in the Health Center St. John in Gayaza. I quickly witnessed the differences between the Ugandan and the German medical health care.

In Germany we always have quick access to medical relief supplies and medicine. This is quite different in Uganda. If something is missing, medicine for instance, then that is what you have to deal with and you have to improvise. The possibilities for treatment and care are very limited. In most cases the reason is a lack of money.

This is the reason why I asked my family and friends for a small cash donations, so that I could not only assist the Health Center St. John with my knowledge but could also support them with material things. They complied with my request and I could change quite a bit in the health center.

Together with my local colleagues we decided for what purpose(s) we wanted to use the money. Among other things we repaired chairs, bought a computer, a stethoscope, as well as urgently needed medicine. We also decided to set up an emergency room. Previously there only had been a treatment room and a doctor’s room. Prior to the establishment of the emergency room, if an emergency patient came, he or she was treated in the patients’ hall, in which we used to have seven beds. Now we have a separate room for emergency patients, which is equipped with some emergency medicine and oxygen.

To be able to continue supporting the people coming to the Health Center St. John I  founded this association with friends and family members. We are a non-profit and registered association. We would like to finance a few projects with the donations we receive.

Please have a look at out projects. You can donate to special project, become a member, or donate to the association in general and in that case we will allocate your money to where it is most needed.

Of course, upon request, we can issue you a donation receipt.
