Menstrual Pad (€2 each)
In Uganda, women and girls are faced with the challenge of managing their menstrual blood/periods. Young girls often miss school for at least 3-5 days every month; men in the countryside often mistreat their wives for the mismanagement of menstrual blood . Poor women and girls in rural areas use unhealthy and unhygienic supplies to manage their periods. While some women use green banana fibers, others use plastic bags and old newspapers to manage their periods.
One solution is the re-usable menstrual pad:
This is made of soft cloth capable of absorbing large quantities of blood, and plastic layer, which prevents the blood from leaking.
What is needed?
- There is a need to train women and girls to manufacture re-usable menstrual pads – this may be cheaper and self-sustaining in the long run.
- There is a need for conducting advocacy campaigns to empower women and girls of reproductive age to:
- Appreciate their days. We will build the capacities of women to freely talk and address the challenges they go through during this natural occurrence.
- Address the unheard voices of women and girls in rural schools
- Provide re-usable menstrual kits making it safe, easy, and convenient for women and girls in rural areas to manage their periods, so they can remain productive both at school and in their homes
- Engage all the community leaders in addressing the social stigma associated with menstruation, as well as the effects of a lack of services and facilities to help women and girls manage this natural yet hidden reality.
